The Cave

In a besieged Eastern Al Ghouta, incessant bombardment has transformed the Syrian landscape into a sinister wasteland; schools, markets, the streets, have all become the front lines of an unconventional battlefield. Feras Fayyad, Oscar nominated director of 2017’s “Last Men in Aleppo”, takes us underground in his third filmic exploration of the Syrian crisis; he brings us to a subterranean hospital, the titular Cave, where the ruinous patriarchal rules of the aboveground cannot apply anymore. Walking the line between life and death, revolution and survival, we find a group of women, a group of doctors, that refuse to be reduced to apathy. “The Cave” takes an unwavering look at their courage, resilience, and solidarity; it paints the reality of women that choose to hold on to the scalpel despite all odds. Nominated for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar in 2020, the film took home two Emmys.
