Masterclass with Mark Rappaport

Artifice – an Alternate Reality

Born in 1942 in New York, Mark Rappaport is one of the most idiosyncratic voices in American cinema with a career that traverses almost five decades and is nearly impossible to categorise. Starting with a series of radical comedies in the 1970s he moved on to essay films about, well, other films! The majority of his work consists of video collages where he uses fragments of well-loved  Hollywood films, depicting household names in unimaginable ways!

In the masterclass he’s going to be teaching in Athens, he will revisit his favourite imagery and illustrate, using many examples from his own work, how his ideas have evolved and, in a sense, still remained the same. He will trace the evolution of his visual style, from his experimental narrative features to his more recent video work, and also discuss, in detail, how he constructs his video pieces. Don’t miss this unique opportunity to get to know him in person.
